Jean Sheridan sets out to attend the twenty-year alumni reunion of Stonecroft Academy, where she is to be honored along with six other distinguished class members. One of their number, Alison Kendall, drowned in her pool and is the fifth whose life has come to a sudden, mysterious end. Jean has received a taunting, anonymous fax referring to the daughter she had given up for adoption twenty years earlier. Jean is introduced to detective Sam Deegan, who is obsessed by an unsolved Stonecroft murder which may hold the key to the killer's identity. Unknown to Jean, among the people she is greeting is The Owl, a murderer nearing the end of his vengeful mission against the Stonecroft women who had mocked and humiliated him.
