Original manuscript was finished in 1894 (about 55,000 words) under the title: Private Fleming : his various battles. Originally published in 1894 in an abbreviated serialized version by The Philadelphia Press. Originally published in a shorter book form in 1895 by Appleton (excludes 12th chapter and endings to chapters 7, 10, and 15). A Norton edition was published in 1982 based on Crane's original 1894 manuscript of 55,000 words with edits by Henry Binder.

Description
A war novel by American author Stephen Crane (1871?1900). Taking place during the American Civil War, the story is about a young private of the Union Army, Henry Fleming, who flees from the field of battle. Overcome with shame, he longs for a wound?a "red badge of courage"?to counteract his cowardice. When his regiment once again faces the enemy, Henry acts as standard-bearer.
