This book describes the pioneering work of germ detectives, scientists such as Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, Marcello Malpighi, Ignaz Semmelweis, Joseph Lister, Louis Pasteur, Robert Koch, and Alexander Fleming. For most of human history, people didn't know what caused disease. The knowledge of germs has only been around for about 150 years. Early people blamed disease on bad air, witchcraft, or punishment from God. Today, we have a better understanding of disease because of the work of these germ detectives.
