Chavez was a migrant farmworker who became a labor organizer for agricultural workers during the 1950s. Later Chavez became the founder of the National Farm Workers Association which fought to improve wages and working conditions for its members. In 1966, he successfully negotiated the first collective bargaining agreement for farmworkers and established the first comprehensive union health benefits for farmworkers and their families.
